Why BMI can overestimate body fat in men

Men tend to carry more muscle than women, and muscle is denser than fat. Because BMI only looks at height and weight, a lean, muscular man — an athlete or someone who lifts regularly — can land in the “overweight” band despite a low body-fat percentage.

If your BMI is borderline but you train hard, treat it as one data point rather than a verdict. A body-fat measurement or a waist check will tell you more.

Waist size: a useful second check for men

Where you store fat matters. Fat around the abdomen is more strongly linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat on the hips or thighs.

For men, a waist circumference above 94 cm (about 37 inches) signals increased risk, and above 102 cm (about 40 inches) signals high risk — regardless of BMI.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good BMI for a man?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for adult men. Very muscular men may sit slightly above this range while still being healthy.

Is BMI accurate for muscular men?

Not always. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular men can get a high BMI despite low body fat. Pair it with a waist measurement or body-fat reading.
