How traditional Korean age works
In the traditional Korean system you are considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone gains a year together on New Year's Day — not on their own birthday. So the formula is simply: current year − birth year + 1.
The three age systems
| System | How it works | Result |
|---|---|---|
| International age | Exact completed years since birth | 30 or 31 |
| Year age (연 나이) | Current year − birth year | 31 |
| Korean age (세는 나이) | Current year − birth year + 1 | 32 |
Example for someone born in 1995, as of 2026.
The 2023 law change
In June 2023 South Korea standardised on international age for legal and administrative purposes, so official documents now use it. Traditional Korean age is still widely used in everyday conversation, which is why people still look it up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my Korean age?
Take the current year, subtract your birth year, then add one. For example, someone born in 1995 has a Korean age of 2026 − 1995 + 1 = 32 in 2026.
Why is my Korean age higher than my real age?
Because the traditional system counts you as 1 at birth and adds a year every New Year rather than on your birthday, Korean age is usually 1–2 years higher than your international age.
